HOW TO KICK OUTFIT GOALS FOR THE AFL GRAND FINAL

There’s one month on the calendar that has our whole city buzzing with excitement: September. And it’s not even because of spring (although that helps). Or Fashion Week (but that’s fun too). The electric atmosphere that descends on Melbourne during this month is all thanks to the AFL Grand Final.

If you love footy, the AFL Grand Final is Christmas, your birthday and a European holiday all rolled in one. That’s how exciting it is. If you don’t care for footy, the AFL Grand Final is an opportunity to score a long weekend, catch up with friends and get amongst the hundreds of events happening in Melbourne.

If you’re currently making plans for Grand Final day, you’re probably trying to figure out what on earth to wear. Casual? Dressed up?? Smart casual??? Team colours???? Nothing at all because it’s too hard????? Don’t stress, because we went shopping to find which current trends would work perfectly for a day of footy celebrations, whether you’re planning to hit a bar or a BBQ.

Double denim for a city adventure

Braving the streets of Melbourne CBD to watch the game and soak up the action? Denim is a comfy, foolproof option - make it fashion by doubling up and pairing back with a casual tank. A statement bag and chic (comfy!) shoes will take your look to the next level. And if you aren’t interested in sticking around for the whole game, you can always go shopping? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Safari for a day by the bar

Bars are overrun on Grand Final day, with Melbournites meeting for lunch and taking advantage of drink packages. Safari is a huge trend in stores at the moment; we love it because it suits practically any venue or occasion. Plus, it’s comfy, which is exactly what you need for a day out with friends. Elevate the look by adding fun accessories.

Printed dresses for a BBQ

Heading to a friend’s house to watch the game, or hosting a celebration of your own? Take it low-key with a printed summer dress, and style it up using your accessories. We noticed these printed dresses were everywhere - they’re the perfect base for your look in spring, and you can wear them solo in summer, too. Make the look your own with a masculine oversized shirt, fresh white sneakers and a few fun accessories!

Take your team loyalty to the next level

Who said you have to wear a scarf?! Look for fashion pieces that tell everyone who you support, or rep wardrobe items in your team colours. Don’t forget your hot chips, pie and jam donut. 😝
