Lights, Camera, MIFF: What to wear to the Melbourne International Film Festival.

Jeff Goldblum, a bunch of showgirls and a Japanese Led Zeppelin super-fan walk into a bar. Weird, sure. Unbelievable? Not really. They’re all appearing in kooky flicks at the Melbourne International Film Festival (or MIFF, for us locals) from August 1-18. So they probably just wanted to get a drink beforehand. Or to be first in line for the candy bar.

Since 1952, Melbournites have been dressing up in their best looks, and dosing up on culture for MIFF. But it’s not just about the movies... oh no. Rather, it’s a crazy, colourful, explosive two-week celebration of everything we love about our great city. Coffee! Outfits! Cocktails! Pre-show shopping! Dumplings for dinner! Cinemas that let you drink wine while sitting in the comfy chairs! MIFF really does have πŸ‘ it πŸ‘ all πŸ‘.

So while we’re not exactly film buffs, one thing we know better than anyone is how to have a great night out in our city. And it looks a lot like this.

Pre-show

First stop, shopping. Catch the train to Melbourne Central for a spot of retail therapy before the movie. Maybe you will buy an outfit or some new shoes. Maybe you will put them on in the change room and wear them straight to MIFF. Up to you.

Next stop, dinner. Here you can really choose your own adventure. Korean fried chicken and cold beer at Sam Sam? A round of pork belly baos at Son In Law? A burger, and a large serving of those delicious salty-rosemary chips from Grill’d? Eat on up, but don’t forget to leave some room because, choc top.

The main event

This year, MIFF has kindly graced us with over 350 films across 20 Melbourne CBD venues — including five new ones. Check out the Venues and Official Program for details.

But more importantly… What to wear? Here’s two Hollywood-appropriate looks to get you started.

THE BRIEF: LEADING LADY

A fashion icon coat, on-trend denim, showstopper accessories and a glass of champagne. You’re straight outta Almost Famous.

THE BRIEF: FILM CRITIC

A chic coloured suit, contrast layering, a pop lip, and popcorn. Always popcorn. You’re smart, but very creative.

Post-show

Whatever time your movie wraps up, is when cocktail hour begins. Head to B.Lucky & Sons for a fancy drink (and in-depth film critiquing session) or grab a bottle from Blackhearts & Sparrows for a nightcap at home.
