Step 1 – Start with clean, shaped nails.
Step 2 – Apply a clear base coat. (Chelsea says this is the most important step.) Allow to dry.
Step 3 – Paint two coats of your lightest colour (for us, that was “Blush”), and allow to dry in between coats.
Step 4 – Paint a little of your second colour (we’re using “Fairy Floss”) on the edge of the sponge.
Step 5 – Blot the sponge on a piece of scrap paper to get rid of excess paint.
Step 6 – Starting at the tip of your nail, lightly blot the colour, working your way down the nail. Leave a little room at the cuticle so your base colour is still visible. The skin on the sides of your nails will get a little messy, but we’ll clean them up later, so don’t worry. Repeat steps 5 – 7 to build up the colour.
Step 7 – With your darkest colour (ours is “Violet”), repeat steps 5 – 7 a few more times, pressing lightly and concentrating on making the tip of your nail nice and dark.
Step 8 – Once your paint has had time to dry, dip a fine paintbrush into nail polish remover and gently clean up the edges of your design. (Chelsea says a nail polish corrector pen works well, too.)
Step 9 – Finally, seal your fresh design with a clear top coat. “This helps to melt all your colours together and really make them fade into each other,” Chelsea tells us. Work that brush into the nail and get it sealed up tight.
Ta da! The final product – a candy-coloured ombré fade, perfect for summer.
