Annie Edney is a Melbourne-based artist who explores our human sensitivity to and relationship with the outside world. Her current work uses video, animation and photography to form semi-abstract, circular ‘tondo’ images that evoke cellular activity. Edney has twenty years’ experience working in community cultural development, creating site-specific events that celebrate the environment and social harmony. Her work is represented in private and public collections including the Museum of the Riverina, Macquarie University and the Abbotsford Convent.

‘The Last Leaf’
2016. Single channel video, no sound, 6:41 minutes.
Cinematographer: David Pawsey. Post Production: Cameron Cliff.

The Last Leaf is a commissioned work used as a prelude for a large-scale outdoor performance about a small community of forest creatures living in the last remaining forest. It was first shown on 4m square LED screens to an audience of 25,000 on 1 January 2016.

Edney explores our human relationship with the planet at a cellular level to investigate the processes by which we assimilate the external world into our emotional selves. Inspired by research grounded in molecular biophysics, she is also integrating personal genealogy and metempsychosis, geology and earth energy. This work was commissioned for the closing ceremony of the Woodford Festival in 2015.

Her video art and photography technique of manipulating elements within a semi-abstracted circular field was developed during her MCA (completed 2015) and remains a strong part of her practice.
