FAQ

Your Questions Answered.
You have questions. We know that. Hopefully this helps.

Is Melbourne Central still open?
  • Yes, the Federal Government advised on 24th March that shopping centres provide ‘essential services to the community'.
  • We continue to be open for our customers, retailers and the broader community to access food, groceries, household items, products, medical services and banking.

Are food retailers still trading?
  • Selected food court retailers, cafes and restaurants within the centre continue to trade offering takeaway and home delivery only.
  • We have removed all tables and chairs from our food courts to facilitate take-away only and to ensure that social distancing practices are adhered to.
  • We continue to take extra precautions to ensure our food courts are clean and hygienic. This includes more frequent cleaning and sanitising high-touch surfaces.
Wearing a mask?
In line with Victorian Government regulations effective now, face masks must be worn at all times when in our centre. We know this is a difficult time, but together we can work to help stop the spread.

When to wear a mask?
If you can and don’t have a medial condition and are over the age of 12, please wear a mask at all times in the centre.

Reasons to remove your mask
When you are eating or drinking, taking medication, smoking or vaping, in a financial institution or bank or during an emergency.

Who doesn’t need to lawfully wear a mask?
People aged under the age of 12-years. Centre staff may approach and ask a person to clarify their age.

Medical condition / reasons including:
  • a person with breathing problems including asthma
  • a person with an assisted breathing apparatus
  • a person with a disability or a mental health condition
  • a person with visual/hearing impairment or loss
  • a person with a skin condition.
Centre staff may approach and ask a person to validate their reason (e.g. a medical certificate).

Practical reason – such as a carer or person assisting a young-child, elderly person or person with special needs, although this may be for a short-period.

Professional reason – e.g. a security guard communicating with a person with identified hearing impairment where the ability to see the mouth is essential for communication or in an emergency situation in the centre.

Victoria Police will be patrolling businesses including Shopping centres to assist customers with any queries in regards to wearing a mask.

Customers that don’t wear a face covering may be approached by staff and if there is no valid explanation or reason provided (e.g. inability to produce a medical certificate), the person may be asked to leave a centre.

How do we know what retailers are closed?
  • As the circumstances for each retailer continues to change, we will have a comprehensive listing on the Melbourne Central Website outlining any temporary store closures as well changes to trading hours.
  • If you are keen to visit specific stores, we recommend that you call the store before coming in to clarify their opening hours.

What are you doing to keep Melbourne Central clean?
  • It goes without saying that we remain absolutely committed to doing everything we can to put the health and safety of our MC community first.
  • We’ve installed free hand sanitiser stations throughout the centre including near our main entrances and exits, near food and dining precincts, and close to bathrooms.
  • We’ve also increased cleaning across the entire centre with particular focus on high foot traffic areas, and established dedicated additional cleaning services to make sure MC remains a place where you can feel safe.
