The denim round-up

Ah, denim. Is there anything it can’t do? It’s a wardrobe staple of every single one of us, has the ability to take us through the day and into the night, works back with absolutely everything else in our wardrobe, and never, ever dates. In fact, denim has a habit of reinventing itself time and time again. This year, it’s happened again.

Here are a few of our favourite trends in denim at the moment – some will be a reminder of eras past, and some will be a completely modern (and fun!) way to wear your favourite fabric.

Trend: Quirky

This modern take on denim is all about more more more – think pearl and crystal embellishments, novelty patches, creative prints, handrawn illustrations, pops of colour and embroidery. Here, denim even extends to hats, backpacks, ankle boots and makeup. Wear a statement piece, or wear them all at once, if you dare.

Trend: Grown-up

We know this girl – she’s effortless, minimal and chic, and can often be found hanging about outside Fashion Week. Her trademarks are sharp blazers, midi skirts, tapered jeans and slip-on mules, complete with simple accessories and a bold scent. This season, these key pieces are given a denim spin for maximum cool-girl vibes.

Trend: Seventies

We love to throw it back! The ‘70s was a huge decade for denim and we’re lucky enough to be experiencing it all over again with high-waisted wide-leg jeans, boilersuits, vintage denim mini skirts, bell sleeves and towering wedges. What’s the ‘70s without a little blue eyeshadow and a pair of coloured shades too?

Trend: Canadian Tuxedo

The Canadian Tuxedo asks for denim, and lots of it, head-to-toe. Each decade has their own spin on the Canadian Tuxedo, from Beverly Hills 90210 in the ‘90s to Britney and Justin’s matching ensembles at the 2002 VMA’s. The 2017 version? We’re going for sweet twin sets, denim shirts pared with denim overalls, and oversized jackets with tomboy jeans.

Trend: Denim Everything (Mens)

Denim has always been a huge part of the men’s casual wardrobe, but as our obsession with denim continues, we’re seeing it spill into their dress wardrobes too. Jeans of every cut and colour are now balanced with chambray-tinted suits and denim dress shoes! It doesn’t stop with the fabric either – at the moment, this deep denim shade can also be found on everything from hats to watches to sunglasses.
